Beginner’s Guide to Paddleboarding

New to paddleboarding? You’re in the right place.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the UK — and for good reason. It’s easy to learn, great for fitness, and suitable for almost all ages and abilities.

If you’re new to paddleboarding, this guide will walk you through the basics so you can choose the right board and get on the water with confidence.

Is Paddleboarding Hard for Beginners?

Short answer: no.

Most beginners are able to stand and paddle within their first session. Inflatable paddleboards are specifically designed to be:

  • Stable

  • Forgiving

  • Easy to balance on

That’s why they’re ideal for first-timers.

What Type of Paddleboard Is Best for Beginners?

For beginners, we strongly recommend an inflatable all-round paddleboard.

Why inflatable paddleboards?

  • More stable than hard boards

  • Softer if you fall on them

  • Easy to transport and store

  • Durable and tough enough for UK waters

All-round boards (usually around 10’–11’) are wide and stable, making them perfect for learning.

What Size Paddleboard Do I Need?

As a general guide:

  • Under 90kg → 10’–10’6 board

  • 90–120kg → 10’6–11’ board

  • Over 120kg → 11’+ board

If you’re unsure, it’s always better to go slightly bigger and wider for extra stability.

What Comes in a Beginner SUP Package?

A complete beginner package usually includes:

  • Paddleboard

  • Adjustable paddle

  • Hand or electric pump

  • Safety leash

  • Backpack for transport

  • Repair kit

This means you don’t need to buy anything else to get started.

All of our beginner boards are sold as complete packages, so you can get on the water straight away.

Where Can Beginners Paddleboard in the UK?

Beginners should start on:

  • Calm lakes

  • Canals

  • Sheltered bays

  • Approved watersports centres

Avoid strong tides, rivers with flow, or open sea conditions until you’re confident.

Always check local access rules and safety guidance before paddling.

What Should Beginners Wear Paddleboarding?

This depends on the weather, but essentials include:

  • A buoyancy aid

  • Appropriate footwear (old trainers or water shoes)

  • A leash (always recommended)

  • Warm layers or a changing robe for after

Safety and comfort matter more than looking the part.

Our Advice for First-Time Paddleboarders

  • Start on calm water

  • Don’t rush — balance comes quickly

  • Expect to fall in (it’s part of the fun)

  • Choose stability over speed

  • Buy a board designed for beginners

The right board makes a huge difference.
